Lucia Araoz
I was born in northern Argentina, where I studied Law and obtained a degree. I got married and moved to New Zealand twenty years ago where I became acquainted with many local artists and jewellers. I trained with one of them, David McLeod, for several years and eventually set up my own workshop.
I enjoy working with gold and silver, as they are ancient metals that connect to older times and peoples. I like the fact that I can shape them to my designs using simple hand tools. Since first coming to New Zealand, I was attracted to the landscapes of Central Otago where I spend a lot of time with my family. I think that my style has been influenced by that start and the rugged environment that reminds me of the mountains in my hometown.
I work slowly and deliberately. When you do jewellery by hand, every piece ends up coming out different and unique, although the ideas may be repeated.
I like simple designs, jewellery that enhances the natural beauty of the wearer without overwhelming.
