Collection: Nicola McLaren

Clay for me has always been food for the soul, whether it's being worked on the wheel or hand built into sculptural forms. I completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Otago Polytechnic in 1996 and have had my hands in clay ever since. I have used this learning, along with previous experience in health fields to also work as a disability support personal tutor at the Polytechnic. I love to teach.

I work intuitively in a very personal process and find that one idea flows into the next. The making becomes a fluid process. Mistakes inform what follows.

Movement, transition and transformation are recurrent notions expressed in my work. Myth, travel through time and thoughts around the imaginary realms of childhood are also incorporated.

I have been fortunate to have exhibited both nationally and internationally.

Nicola McLaren lives in Dunedin, New Zealand.
