I’ve had an interest in jewellery for a long time, especially historical jewels. I’m sure this is, at least in part, connected with my love of history. What ancient and mediaeval jewellers could do with so few tools astounds me!
As well as the beauty and artistry of jewellery, I’m fascinated by the the skills that craftspeople use to create pieces from raw materials like metal and gemstones. I like the feeling of calling myself a craftsman, making jewellery that connects with the past and yet is also contemporary.
It’s also a continuing delight and challenge to develop my own design and creative awareness and I can sense that expanding. Currently, I am enjoying exploring the ways that metal can be formed and shaped and then embellished. Jewellery as miniature, wearable sculpture really grabs me.
