Collection: Stephen Myhre

Born in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, with a family history of skilled crafts on both sides, Stephen Myhre grew up learning how to use wood carving tools. Initially wood carving was a hobby during his university studies, but it quickly became his main focus. A meeting with Owen Mapp turned his focus from furniture to smaller scale and bone carving. Spending time in Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu, he honed his skills, and began to explore hard stone carving upon his return to New Zealand. Further time in Moscow opened up opportunities to carve semi-precious materials, and expand his range of diamond tools. Always returning to New Zealand, Stephen now carves from his workshop in Paraparaumu. Stephen has written two books on carving, "Bone Carving: A Skillbase of Techniques and Concepts" and "Wood Carving: Tools, Techniques and Concepts".
